Standard: TAPPI
Method: UM 246
Title: Micro Kappa Number
Overview
Kappa number method
T 236 “Kappa Number of Pulp” is modified to make it applicable to very small samples and to semi-bleached pulps with low permanganate consumption. The volume of water and of the reagents is reduced in proportion, and the permanganate concentration and acidity is maintained the same as
T 236. The test results obtained by this modification should be identical with that obtained by
T 236; however, the use of the modified method should be stated prominently in the report. The method is useful for testing semi-bleached pulps with lignin content as low as about 15%, and for evaluation of materials from miniature pulping and bleaching experiments.
Samples
The amount of sample is similar to that of
T 236. The equivalent of 15 grams oven-dried sample is desired to perform proper testing of the sample. If sample is limited, testing can be run on as little as three grams. Test is run as a single determination, per the method. Duplicate determination can be done at additonal cost if requested by the client.
