Test Methods

Standard:     TAPPI

Method:         T 220

Title:               Physical testing of pulp handsheets

Overview
This method is used to determine the physical properties of handsheets prepared in accordance with T 205 “Forming Handsheets for Physical Test of Pulp.” The properties include: basis weight (grammage), thickness or caliper, specific volume, apparent density, scattering coefficient, tensile properties, burst, tear, and MIT folding endurance. Information derived from handsheet testing is a measure of the potential contribution of the pulp to the strength of the finished paper product. Some methodology and calculations can be used for machine made paper including specific volume, apparent density, and scattering coefficient, where the testing is independent of machine directionality.

Samples
To perform adequate testing ten TAPPI handsheets are generally required, although five handsheets may be acceptable for routine test purposes. For IPS to make the necessary number of handsheets, a minimum of 30 grams of dry pulp is requested.
