Test Methods

Standard:     TAPPI

Method:         T 211

Title:               Ash in wood, pulp, paper and paperboard:  combustion at 525°C

Overview
Ash testing can be performed on a wide variety of substances and determines the amount of inorganic residues left after ignition at 525°C. Ash content is determined from the dry weight of the sample and the weight of the ash. For samples with fillers, coating and pigments TAPPI Test Method T 413, Ash at 900°C may be recommended.

Samples
To perform adequate testing, at least two and a half grams of sample are needed.  This ensures that a duplicate can be run for each sample to be tested.  If sample availability is limited, testing can be performed in duplicate using less sample or as a single determinant.
